Wonder Studio —

Workspace & Office Environment

A refined palette of timber, plaster and sculptural object defines the interior of the Wonder headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand, designed in-house by the team at Wonder.

The 170m² studio, once a brothel, now occupies a thoughtfully pared-back space within a character building overlooking the heart of Ponsonby, recently restored by Patterson Architects.

'Our goal was to create a refined, minimalist environment where tactile surfaces and curated details deliver a distinct, layered experience. We envisioned a home base where our team could do their very best work while comfortably hosting clients and project partners,' explains Buster Caldwell, Creative Director.

"The design response is no-nonsense.

A curation of style and function begins to blur the line between office and showroom and creates a space that settles a creative energy, directing it in a considered and comfortable direction.

The interior is presented as a wonderful expression of restraint and neutrality that is sympathetic and beautifully complemented by natural light."

A commissioned glass artwork by studio regular Luke Jacomb floats gracefully above the six-meter-long communal table.

The table, hand-built by the team, is crafted from timber sourced from Buster’s family farm, a personal and hand-finished piece that forms the heart of the space.

In a timber-lined alcove, a thoughtfully curated selection of materials and finishes takes center stage, designed to inspire and provoke creativity.

Constantly evolving, this tactile library showcases the primary finishes being woven into the fabric of ongoing studio projects, offering a glimpse into the studio’s work in progress.

Wonder drew inspiration from the building's original design, carefully crafting the interiors to honour its character.

"We reimagined residential warmth within a workspace context, integrating them seamlessly into the space," says Creative Director, Buster Caldwell.

This approach accentuates the buildings' character more boldly, while staying true to our focus on creating serene, inviting environments with alluring textures and finishes.
